In a valley town ringed by the Blue Ridge and Massanutten, 'within 300 feet of woodland' describes most properties. So the burn window is narrow, legally fraught and easy to get wrong.
What you can't burn at all
Even outside that window, plenty can't be burned regardless. Virginia DEQ prohibits burning construction and demolition debris. Pressure-treated lumber - old deck boards, fence posts, treated framing - can never be burned, because the preservatives turn toxic in smoke.
So a cleanup that mixes brush with an old fence, a torn-out deck or renovation debris can't legally go up in one fire even if the timing were fine.
Why the convenience sites don't solve it
The county's neighborhood convenience sites take bagged household trash - not a truckload of limbs, a hedgerow or land-clearing debris. And for-hire haulers can't use them at all.
